Doctor Who Season 5 Episode 5 ‘Flesh and Stone’ Recap

By · Monday, May 17th, 2010

If possible, the Weeping Angels are even scarier in the conclusion of this two-parter than in the beginning. The episode was fundamentally a forty-two minute chase scene, but that helped provide a backdrop for deeper issues involving the plotline of the season.

Still, it would be nice if they could do something more malevolent to a person rather than snapping their neck. Why not turn them into another Angel upon contact? Or perhaps that’s too reminiscent of zombies and Cybermen.

This also represents a milestone in ‘Doctor Who’ as the show has now had its first on-screen attempted rape. More on that after the jump.

Amy Pond sure is frisky, isn’t she? That scene at the end seriously bordered on the disturbing. On the other hand, Amy Pond has been kind of odd since she came on board and her relationship with Rory is reminiscent of the relationship between Rose and Micky (he thought there was one and she didn’t). It’s likely part of the Moffat masterplan since the entire season revolves around Amy and the crack in time that is stalking her.

At least now we know the insidious results of falling through the crack (insert jokes here). If the Angels no longer ever existed, does that mean the episode ‘Blink’ never happened? Or was that a completely different set of Angels?

‘Doctor Who’ has always been rife with internal contradictions and events that people simply couldn’t forget. The cracks seem a solution to explain them (previously it was the Time War).

We got more backstory of River Song. The implication is that some day she will marry and/or kill the Doctor (which to some would be the same thing). Will the murder result in a regeneration or will it be his final death? Will that be the circumstance in which he reveals his true name to River? We’ve also had a hint towards the season finale, in which the Pandorica is going to open (something mentioned by both Prisoner Zero and River Song) on the date that coincides with Amy’s wedding and the broadcast of the season finale (assuming there are no interruptions). Stay tuned.

For those that didn’t notice, when the Doctor showed up to comfort Amy when she was blind in the forest, he was wearing a different outfit (including his coat, which he had lost previously in the episode during an Angel attack). Moffat excels at non-linear storytelling and that is likely a hint of the bigger picture, particularly how he kept asking Amy to remember what he told her as a child.

This episode demonstrates the differences in writing styles between Moffat and his predecessor Russell T. Davies. Davies would have waited until the twelve episode to reveal the secret behind the cracks in time, dropping only reminders during the episodes of the season (such as he did with “Bad Wolf” and “Torchwood”). Moffat did the reveal by the fifth episode and in doing so enhanced and possibly changed the story direction of the season.
