Ninth Doctor- Portrayed by Christopher Eccleston
Ninth Doctor- The series was cancelled in 1989, after the death of seventh Doctor and regeneration of the eighth Doctor. But the Eighth Doctor appeared only in the television movie, which came in 1993. The series returned again on public demand in 1996, with the ninth Doctor. The past and the cause behind regeneration of ninth Doctor are not revealed on the show. He has been shown as the only survivor of the Time War. This Doctor is pretty different from the previous Doctors. He hardly acts as a central hero. In fact he uses his intelligence and information to inspire his companions to encounter the dangers. He hardly takes direct action himself. He relies more upon his human companions than the previous Doctors. He is sentimental and emotional, especially when it comes to his close friends. The Ninth Doctor, like fifth Doctor, too sacrifices his life for his companion. When his closest companion Rose, tries to open up the heart of TARDIS, she absorbs so much of energies of Time Vortex. To save her from being consumed by these energies, Doctor absorbs that energy into himself. It damages his cells and causes his regeneration into tenth Doctor.
